FlightSafety International invests in National Intercollegiate Flying Association

SAFECON National Championship now ‘powered by FlightSafety’

COLUMBUS, OH (March 10, 2022)Today, FlightSafety International announced its commitment to the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) for naming rights to the SAFECON National Championship. With this commitment, the event becomes SAFECON National Championship Powered by FlightSafety.

NIFA is a forum in which collegiate aviators can expand their studies and further their careers. Students participate in competitive and non-competitive events, network with industry peers, and apply themselves to push beyond their ordinary curriculum.

The organization’s roots go back to 1919 to a group of students at Columbia University who formed a flying club. Young aviators returning from World War I to their college studies sought to use their training and experience to further the cause of civil aviation.

Similar clubs were formed thereafter at other colleges and universities across the U.S., including Harvard, Princeton, Yale and others. On May 7, 1920, nine schools competed in the first contest held by the Intercollegiate Flying Association. NIFA’s history can be viewed here.

Today, more than 80 colleges and universities compete in regional and national competitions held by NIFA.

FlightSafety’s financial commitment will ensure NIFA’s continued mission, further advance the competition and expand the event to aviation maintenance students.

“Both NIFA and FlightSafety have a long history of supporting aviation,” said Nate Speiser, Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing at FlightSafety. “We’re looking forward to supporting students’ passion for aviation through this partnership, and to further promoting the many exciting career paths available.”

“Our mission is to do whatever we can to support collegiate aviators and help prepare them for careers in aviation,” said Taylor Newman, Executive Director, National Intercollegiate Flying Association. “FlightSafety’s support of this mission takes it to a whole new level and helps shed even more light on NIFA. It’s just a great match for both of us.”
